An apartment fire affected 23 people in six apartment units in Miami Gardens on Tuesday, the American Red Cross said.
Around 1:40 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were working to put out a second alarm fire in the area of Northwest 213th Terrace and Ninth Place, the fire department tweeted.
The Miami Herald’s news partner, CBS4, reported that 20 fire rescue squads were called.
“Particularly with a fire like this, it happened on the third floor and it could easily spread through the attic, so we always want to be one step ahead of the fire to prevent damaging more units than need be,” Horacio Rodriguez, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department head, told CBS 4.
Local Red Cross volunteers helped coordinate emergency relief for 23 people from six housing units, including 12 children, the organization said in an email.
Henry Mathieu, a resident of the building, told CBS4: “You can see through the third floor. You can see through it. It’s bad. It’s really bad.”
