Miami Gardens Police shoot and kill armed man throughout disaster response – NBC 6 South Florida

A 33-year-old man is dead after being shot by police Friday afternoon in Miami Gardens during a response to a reported crisis, authorities said.

Miami Gardens Police said officers were called to a home near the 3400 block of Northwest 182nd Street around 4 p.m. after a family member reported the man was experiencing a crisis.

According to Police Chief Delma K. Noel-Pratt, officers encountered the man in the back of the residence, where an altercation occurred and officers saw that he was armed.

Police did not confirm what type of firearm the man was holding, but said there was more than one weapon at the scene. During the encounter, one to two officers fired their weapons, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors said they were unsure exactly what happened but reported hearing multiple gunshots.

“Like 10 shots, and then maybe one minute later, 30 cop cars came by — every kind of cop car,” said neighbor Bryan Delpozo.

Another neighbor said they were frightened by the sounds of gunfire.

“I was hearing two sounds — boom, boom — and I was so scared,” the neighbor said.

Chopper6 video from the scene showed what appeared to be a yellow tarp covering a body outside the home.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as required by department protocol. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will lead the investigation into the shooting.

Police have not yet released the identity of the man who was killed. Relatives of the man spoke with NBC6 off camera and were described as emotional.
