A judge denied bond Wednesday for a Miami Gardens couple accused of operating what prosecutors described as the largest drug operation ever uncovered by the Miami Gardens Police Department.
Anthony Gordon and Danette Young are facing drug trafficking charges punishable by up to life in prison after investigators say they found approximately $5 million worth of illegal drugs, more than $1.3 million in cash, and more than 10 firearms inside their home.
The investigation began after what police initially believed was a home invasion robbery. According to investigators, a man attempted to rob Gordon and Young at their residence. Prosecutors say Young ran to a neighbor’s home for help, and the neighbor fatally shot the alleged robbery suspect outside the home.
While responding to the shooting, investigators said their attention quickly shifted after discovering evidence of an alleged drug trafficking operation inside the home. Authorities testified that drugs were concealed in plastic baggies and even hidden inside Graham cracker boxes. Detectives also recovered more than $1.3 million in cash.
During Wednesday’s hearing, prosecutors presented previously unreleased evidence as they argued Gordon and Young should remain behind bars.
The judge agreed, citing concerns about community safety because of the large quantity of drugs and weapons allegedly found at the residence.
The defense argued prosecutors failed to prove the drugs and money belonged to the couple and asked the court to release them on bond while the case proceeds.
The judge denied that request, ordering Gordon and Young to remain in jail pending trial.
Prosecutors say the case remains an active state and federal investigation.
